Our Mission

To promote and support the professional role of the Registered Nurse in Family Practice

Our objectives are:

  1. To represent the interest of nurses concerned with family practice;
  2. To promote the quality of family practice nursing by providing mechanisms for the exchange of knowledge and information;
  3. To provide up to date information relevant to family practice nursing to improve knowledge base;
  4. To provide a forum for networking;
  5. To discuss common concerns in the area of family practice nursing;
  6. To act as nurse resource for individuals or groups on issues concerning family practice nursing.

What is our structure?

We have an elected executive, which at present consists of President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Director (who handles website and newsletter), Membership Director, and Member at Large. At present, there is one area Chapter in Ottawa. Every 2 years we hold a Biennial General Meeting (BGM) and Conference.

How did we come about?

In the early 1980s the late Terry O’Neil, BScN and her colleagues in London, Ontario brought together Family Practice Nurses to create a forum to network professionally and to organize educational opportunities. OFPN was organized in 1991 and our constitution was passed in 1992. In 1996, we became an Associated Interest Group of RNAO.
